Hey everyone! Welcome back to another Top Ten Tuesday. Isn’t this just everyone’s favorite part of the week? I know I always look forward to it.

For anyone who may not know, Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by our bookish friends over at The Broke and the Bookish. Check our their blog for weekly topics!

This week is top ten things on our reading wishlist. For once, I actually had a problem narrowing it down to ten. Because there are a lot of things I want to see in more books. Luckily, a lot of these things do exist in books but… we can never have enough!

10. Peter Pan retellings, especially dark ones. I’ve always been fascinated with the idea of Peter Pan. A boy who comes in the middle of the night and kidnaps children from their beds with a promise of adventure… Interesting. Not to mention, there are some seriously dark undertones in the original work. (Like the implication that Peter kills the lost boys when they get too old.) The Child Thief is one that’s on my radar. And I feel like I really want to get into the show Once Upon a Time just for the evil Peter Pan storyline. (The first time I ever saw Robbie Kay I thought to myself that he looked like an evil Peter Pan and WHAT DO YOU KNOW. Excellent casting.)

9. On that same note, more King Arthur/Merlin/Camelot retellings. My father’s name is Arthur, and my maternal grandfather used to call him “The King.” So I think because of that, we always loved the King Arthur legend. Merlin on BBC is definitely my favorite show of all time, and I loved that they messed with the legend a little by making Merlin and Arthur contemporaries. So more Arthur retellings, please.

8. Beauty and the Geek. I will never not want to read about a hot girl falling for a geeky guy. The Girl Next Door and She’s Out of My League are films that come to mind. Ships like Ross/Rachel from Friends, Chuck/Sarah from Chuck, and Leonard/Penny from The Big Bang Theory are also faves. I will never not like this trope.

7. Circus/Carnival books. I love the circus. Always have. And I’d love to read more about it! Especially if there’s mystery. Unfortunately, The Night Circus wasn’t for me. But I’m looking forward to seeing if I enjoy Caraval.

6. Love triangle variations. I have accepted that love triangles aren’t going anywhere. People wouldn’t keep writing them if people weren’t reading them. YA love triangles typically involve two men having feelings for our female protagonist. Maybe instead of the female protagonist being the object of affection, she and another girl both like the same guy. Maybe a guy and girl both like the same bisexual guy or girl. Maybe it’s three guys. Maybe it’s three girls. Maybe Person A likes Person B but Person B likes person C and Person C likes Person A. Again, I still would prefer no love triangle. But if I have to keep finding them, a little variety would be nice.

5. A love interest who is not described as being the hottest guy on the planet. Let’s face it. Not every person in the world is stunningly attractive. Yes, I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder. No, I’m not asking to have anyone’s looks mocked. But God forbid I read a Cassandra Clare book and not have every guy described as being drop dead gorgeous. I’d love to see two characters who don’t particularly find each other attractive and they grow more attractive to each other as their feelings grow. Something other than, “Oh my God. My friends and I all stopped dead in our tracks because he was STUNNING.” (And no, the plain Jane girls who think they’re ugly but are actually gorgeous do not count.)

4. Every book being released in hardcover and paperback at the same time. I pretty much only buy hardcover books. Probably because I don’t buy a lot of books. So when I do, I don’t mind splurging. But how annoying is it when I want to buy a book and there’s only a paperback? (Mostly I’m talking about Captive Prince. I can’t even lie.) Or for my paperbacks-preferred friends, how annoying is it that new releases are almost always hardcover only? I know they do this because money… But hey, it’s a wish list, right?

3. Strong female characters who aren’t necessarily physically strong. Kestrel from The Winner’s Trilogy by Marie Rutkoski is first to come to mind. She could handle a sword, sure, but her strength came from her mind. Give me a woman who outsmarts all the men over a woman who can sword fight with them any day. Don’t get me wrong, I love my physically strong ladies and want them too. Brienne of Tarth, I’m looking at you. But let’s get rid of this idea that a woman is only strong if she’s physically strong.

2. Roman-inspired fantasies. (Especially gladiators.) I find most fantasies seem to be based on medieval England. Now I love medieval England. (Merlin is my favorite TV show and is based on medieval England.) But a little variety would be nice! I particularly enjoyed An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir and Mark of the Thief by Jennifer A. Nielsen for their Roman-inspired and straight Roman settings.

1. LGBT+ characters. For me, specifically, I just want lots of books with gay boys. Yes, I’m one of those. I don’t have any particular interest in lesbian fiction, but I definitely think we need more of it. (For the record, I do not dislike lesbian fiction. But whereas seeing m/m relationships in books makes me want to pick it up more, a lesbian relationship has no more or less appeal to me than a heterosexual one.) I’ve yet to read any books with transgender characters or characters on the ace spectrum. But I think it’s important that we’re all able to find ourselves in book characters. So representation is key, even beyond gay and lesbian.

  1. Oh, so many great points on this list! I would love to see the love triangle evaporate, but like you said, it’s not going anywhere, so it would be great to shake it up a bit!

And strength can mean so many different things, I definitely wish we could see more strong girl characters who aren’t necessarily physically strong, or extroverted. Us shy, quiet girls can still be strong, too! 🙋

    1. Agreed – no love triangles would be best. But if I have to deal with some, some variety would be great! I also totally agree with you. Physically strong women (and characters) are great. But I’d love to see awesome ladies who are shown as being strong for reasons other than they can swing a sword. You’re right! You can be shy and quiet and be strong.

  2. Great choices. While I’ve had my fill on Peter Pan retellings for a bit. I am so down for king arthur ones. Have you read the Once and Future King? Its on my TBR and is a King arthur retelling. Do you like Historical Fantasies? Because there is this series Blood of God’s and Monsters that is a retelling of Alexander the Great but with magic and stuff. 🙂 so good.

    1. Maybe you could recommend some Peter Pan retellings because I’ve come across just the one! I have read the Once and Future King. Read it with my dad a loooong time ago. So it’s one I’ll have to read again. Also, if the first book of that series is Legacy of Kings, it’s on my TBR. I don’t think I knew it had magic, which makes it waaaay more intriguing to me now!

      1. Unhooked by Lisa Maxwell, Everland by Wendy Spinale, Never Ever by Sara Saedi, Never Never by Brianna Shrum, Stars by Colleen Oaks, The Neverland Wars by Audrey Greathouse, Nora & Kettle by Lauren Nicole Taylor…. Ps all of these came out between late 2015 and 2016…. yep.

  3. I agree with sooooo much of this! Especially circus books. I love me a good circus book, and I also was SO DISAPPOINTED with The Night Circus. I’m totally with you on the love triangles, too. There is a lot of potential for variation, and yet so many authors rely on the tried-and-true two hot boys in love with hot girl one. Why not make one of the boys geeky? Or bisexual! And the boys are also into each other! And they all should definitely not be described as the hottest beings on the planet.

    1. I’m glad I’m not alone in regards to The Night Circus! I really WANTED to love it and I just couldn’t. But yes, if we have to see love triangles, why not variety?? If I have to read about two hot guys fighting over a hot girl one more time… Seriously. Not everyone on the planet is gorgeous!! And they fall in love all the time! Thanks for stopping by. (:

  4. I would love to see more Camelot/ Arthurian retellings. Haven’t seen one in ages! Circus/ carnival books too. Need more of those. I just read Freeks by Amanda Hocking and it was pretty good- not excellent but decent. I’d like to find more…

  5. I actually prefer buying paperbacks to hardcovers so whenever a new book/series releases and it’s only available in hardcover I get really angry! I bought Lady Midnight in hardcover because it was the only thing available and then when I looked at the price for the Lord Of Shadows hardcover I was ready to punch someone over the head! I ended up getting a paperback copy of Lady Midnight and then pre-ordered LOS in paperback too and both those books were still cheaper than JUST LOS. It’s ridiculous.

I never even thought about the fact that maybe love triangles would be more fun if they had a variation to them! Now I want that too! It would also open the characters up for some great conversations and it would just show a different side to relationships than just having straight people in a love triangle!

And btw, thanks for adding me on Goodreads! I accepted your request. 🙂 And I would be BFFs with Magnus Bane too, for sure! He gets to hang out with Alec! And more great people!

    1. Like I said, I don’t purchase books often, so when I do, I don’t mind splurging. I just think hardcovers look nicer. But if you buy a lot of books, like you said, hardcovers can be soooo pricey! (But I guess that’s why publishers only release them at first!)

I’d still probably prefer no love triangle, but if I have to keep resding them, I’d LOVE some variety. And throwing in LGBT+ characters could make them so much more interesting!

No prob. 😊 I saw the question and IMMEDIATELY had my answer. I was like, “Oh. Magnus Bane. Hands down!”

  6. MERLIN! I bloody love Merlin. I cried like a baby during the last episode. My throat still gets tight when I think about it. I don’t know if this would be of any interest but Meg Cabot wrote a high school retelling of Arthurian legend called Avalon High, but it’s not focused on Arthur. Dark Peter Pan retellings sound glorious. I need that. I’ve definitely noticed the hot thing more recently. Why does it matter if they look one way or another? Great list!

    1. It’s my FAVORITE show! I love it so much. I’ve rewatched it a couple times and every time I get to the finale I’m like NOPE! I actually waited like… three weeks to watch it after I watched it the first time around because I knew what happened. Haha.

Also, I LOVE Meg Cabot. I’ve read a lot of her books (and someday I will read them all). I did read Avalon High a loooong time ago and I enjoyed it. (:

The one dark Peter Pan retelling I know about is called The Child Thief. I’ve not read it, but I want to!

And TOTALLY agree. Like, if there’s one hot guy in the book, great. But I just feel like if every guy in every book is super hot, does it really mean anything anymore??

      1. Whenever I rewatch it just skip the last episode and pretend everything was happy, otherwise I ugly cry!
Meg Cabot is brilliant. She was my favourite writer when I was a kid! Her Jane Austen-style novels are perfect!
I might have to add The Child Thief to my TBR! 🙂
Yes! Its frustrating because it happens so often in TV as well!

  7. I would give so much to have hardbacks and paperbacks available at the same time. I definitely prefer paperbacks, but sometimes you have to wait so long for them to be released. Great list! 🙂

  8. Your list is absolutely fantastic!! I love the idea of Beauty and the Geek and love triangle variations. Those would be fun! I read Strange the Dreamer a couple of months ago and the MC is described as not being very attractive and I loved that aspect of the story! Wonderful list!

    1. Thanks! I don’t even need the character to be described as unattractive. Why can’t she just be average? (And not secretly gorgeous when she takes her glasses off. Lol) But I love hearing that about Strange the Dreamer!

  9. Yes to #5! Oh my gosh, how about some real-life people? Guys who aren’t necessarily devastatingly sexy and panty-melting hot. Like, just an average guy. And I am so over the drop dead gorgeous girl who “doesn’t know” she’s beautiful. Who goes around saying she’s plain or average but every other character describes her as gorgeous. Gah! Please make it stop.

  10. What a great list! I agree, representation is key. I read The Night Circus and it wasnt for me either.
I prefer hardcovers too but only splurge on them when it’s a favorite author.
    Enjoy your week!

    1. Hey, and I thought I was the only one who didn’t like The Night Circus! Like I mentioned, I only buy my favorite books, so I’m able to splurge on them. But we should definitely get the option of having either! Enjoy your week too!

  11. Great choices! Out of curiosity, have you read Peter Darling by Austin Chant? It’s a Peter Pan retelling where Peter is a trans guy and has a crush on Captain Hook. I haven’t read it yet, but I have it and can’t wait to read it!!
