Hey friends! Welcome back to another Top Ten Tuesday. For anyone who may not know, Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by our friends over at The Broke and the Bookish. This week was a cover-themed freebie. I wanted to do something a little different, rather than just Top Ten Cover Buys or Top Ten Favorite Covers. Because I’ll probably end up doing those another time, not part of TTT. This week, I’m doing covers that remind me of each other. And once again, I don’t have ten things. But here we are!
The Ascendance Trilogy by Jennifer A. Nielsen &
the Captive Prince trilogy by C.S. Pacat
First we have the three novels in the Captive Prince trilogy.
Then we have the three novels in The Ascendance Trilogy.
Just look at the middle two books especially. Are these not the same cover?? Not that I’m complaining. I will admit that one of the reasons I picked up The False Prince so soon after finishing Captive Prince was because of the similar covers and similar names. False Prince, Captive Prince. You know. And these are now two of my favorite book series of all times. So definitely no complaints.
The Ascendance Trilogy by Jennifer A. Nielsen &
The Winner’s Trilogy by Marie Rutkoski &
Summoner series by Taran Matharu
I think we can just file this under generic YA cover and be done with it. There are a ton of covers that have this exact vibe, these are just the ones that first came to mind. Interestingly enough, and I think we can all agree, these are definitely the inferior version of The Winner’s Trilogy covers (and definitely the inferior versions of The Ascendance Trilogy, though I’m still pretty sure I’m the only one who’s read this book series…). I think a lot of publishers are trying to capitalize on Throne of Glass with this aesthetic (because Throne of Glass would easily fit in with these covers), even if girl-with-weapon doesn’t fit the book. Because, you know, the whole point of The Winner’s Trilogy was that Kestrel wasn’t a warrior. But okay. Sure.
Twilight/Life and Death by Stephenie Meyer &
Winter by Marissa Meyer
I didn’t realize until I was typing this that the authors have the same last name! But anyway, it makes sense that Twilight and Life and Death have similar covers. (In this case, it’s not same cover, different book; it’s same cover, same book.) But as soon as I saw the cover for Winter by Marissa Meyer, it immediately reminded me of Life and Death. I get how the apple relates to Winter, a Snow White retelling. Still trying to figure out how it relates to vampires…
A Weekend with Mr. Darcy by Victoria Connelly &
The Single Girl’s To-Do List by Lindsey Kelk &
In the Bag by Kate Klise
(Yes, these are all different books. Really.) I own A Weekend with Mr. Darcy (and it was a rare DNF because I hated it), and recently I saw someone on booktube talking about a book, and I said to myself, “Wait a minute. I know that cover.” I realized it had the same image on it as A Weekend with Mr. Darcy. A week or so later, I decided to do this topic for TTT, so I was looking through my watched videos and even googled to try to remember what that cover was. I didn’t find it, but I did find two other books that use the same stock image. A Weekend with Mr. Darcy at least looks a little different… but The Single Girl’s To-Do List and In the Bag might as well have the exact same cover. Oy.
So there you have it! Can you think of any other covers that look similar or remind you of others? What did you guys do for your own Top Ten Tuesday? Link me in the comments!
Cool take on this week’s topic. I don’t know why but I always get a little weirded out when I see the same stock photo used on different books.

Thanks! I actually never knew this was a thing that happened until I saw that other cover on YouTube and thought… Wait! I’ve seen that before!

This is so funny! Good idea for this topic. There is this one cover of a woman in black dress that I see on historical fiction books ALL the time, and it always weirds me out/cracks me up.

Thank you! I hadn’t realized people even used stock images on book covers! I’m now going to look out for the woman in black dress when I see historical fiction covers. Haha.

Fantastic theme for the topic! I love seeing all the similar tropes used in covers, you don’t realize how many “variations” on the same idea exist until you really look at it. But those last 3! 😮 That’s insane. I’m not a fan of the same stock photo being used. Have a bit of originality!! Great post!

Thank you! As I was researching, I realized there were sooooo many similar covers. Which happens, I get it. But I must say, I’d be super disappointed if I was the author of those last two and found out another book has the exact cover as mine!! Not a fan of stock photos either.

Yes! I had really wanted to do a take on that too, the similar covers. I almost did a second post but didn’t have time, and then I saw posts that were better than mine would have been anyway 🙂

Haha. I’m sure that’s not true. And you can always do it later if inspiration strikes. ☺

I like your interesting take on this week’s topic! I didn’t know the same stock photos were used for different books.

Thanks! And honestly, I had no idea either until I saw the photo that I recognized from a book I own!

Oh, I like your take on this week’s topic! And OMG, I had no idea so many covers looked alike! Especially the last one is just weird and a little sad 🙂
But OMG, I loved the Captive Prince series and I do have the first book in the False Prince series though I haven’t started it yet, but I’m so glad to hear you loved both series!

Thanks! I feel like it would be such a bummer to write a book and then find out another book has the exact same cover…
Captive Prince and The False Prince are veeeeery different but I love them both so much! I’m very glad they had similar covers so I could find The False Prince. Haha. But yeah! Those last two are basically the same cover. Soooo weird.

That last example is crazy! I wonder if they all have the same publisher, because it’s totally the same picture of the girl.

I know! I kind of doubt it’s the same publisher. The photo is probably just freely available. It’s so weird though!

The crown theme on book covers seems to be going around lately.
I love your thoughts on the Darcy stock image covers. The two others are pretty much the same cover. Yikes.

For sure! Cruel Crown by Victoria Aveyard is another that would fit in. The Crown’s Game by Evelyn Skye also has a crown outline. Just others that popped into my head! And yeah… They’re basically identical. So weird!
